Photo of the Night: Lunar Perigee over Copacabana Beach

Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – July 12th, 2014.

While unfortunately for soccer fans, Brazil was yet again loosing a game and their chance for the World Cup 3rd spot, other eyes saw the true show up there in the sky.  It was Super Moon last night – when the Moon is closer to the Earth than at any other time making it appear much bigger in the sky.  The scientific name for this is Lunar Perigee.  The Super Moon will bring high tides and heightened emotions.

Without a tripod or a bigger lense, I can only stop breathing and try my best not to move for that important second when I press the shutter of the camera.  Anyway, « it is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye, » as the Little Prince said.  That’s exactly how I feel when I look at my picture.

Did you see the Lunar Perigee last night?

[Es]  Mientras Brasil estaba perdiendo otro partido y su 3er lugar en la Copa del Mundo, desgraciadamente para sus aficionados, otros ojos vieron el verdadero espectáculo ahí arriba en el cielo.  Fue Super Luna anoche – cuando la Luna está mucho más cerca de la Tierra que en cualquier otro momento, resultando en que se viera mucho más grande en el cielo.  El nombre científico es Perigeo Lunar.  La Super Luna provocará mareas más importantes y emociones más fuertes.

Sin ningún trepie o lente más grande, sólo puedo dejar de respirar e intentar no moverme durante el importante segundo que necesito cuando empujo el obturador de la cámara.  De todos modos, « no se ve bien sino con el corazón.  Lo esencial es invisible a los ojos, » dijó el Principito muy a propósito.  Así me siento cuando miro mi foto.

¿Vieron el Perigeo Lunar anoche?

[Fr]  Alors que, malheureusement pour ses fans, le Brésil perdait encore un match et toute prétention à la 3ème place du podium de la Coupe du Monde, d’autres yeux ont trouvé où se trouvait le véritable spectacle: là-haut dans le ciel.  C’était la Super Lune hier soir – lorsque la Lune est bien plus proche de la Terre que d’habitude, ce qui fait qu’on la voit bien plus grosse dans le ciel.  Le nom scientifique du phénomène est Périgée Lunaire.  La Super Lune provoquera d’importantes marées et des émotions plus profondes.

Sans trépied ni objectif adéquat, je ne peux que retenir ma respiration et bouger le moins possible durant cette importante seconde durant laquelle j’appuie sur l’obturateur de l’appareil photo.  De toutes façons, « on ne voit bien qu‘avec le cœur. L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux, » a dit bien justement le Petit Prince.  C’est ce que je ressens en regardant ma photo.
