If I had to choose a beach along the Caribbean coast of Mexico, I’d always choose Tulum. Or course, I might fall for another one the day I dig deeper into Mahahual or discover Bacalar Laguna (closer to the border with Belice), but meanwhile, Tulum stays first in my heart. I can’t get tired of the turquoise waters, the amazing Mayan ruins overlooking the ocean along the steep cliff and the myriad of activities one can tackle when on vacation there. Every time a friend comes and visits us, I take them there. Must-see stop.
Besides the obvious, Tulum is still relatively comfy. Of course, it is packed with tourists and tourist shops (priced accordingly); but it is far from the bustling too-much of Playa del Carmen or the absolute fake of Cancun.
I love its laid-back atmosphere, being able to rent a bike and wander around without any restrain, having so many options for diving – either out at sea or cave-diving -, the dozens of fabulous sinkholes hidden in the jungle or the beautiful secluded lagunas, having the possibility to take a day off away from everything and connect with nature in Sian Ka’an Reserve.
After so many times in town, I have my little preferences and favorites too: I usually have lunch or dinner at the same places (El Capitán, Antojitos La Chiapaneca, Burrito Amor, La Gloria de Don Pepe) and I usually stay at the same place (Hostel Rancho Tranquilo).
Last November, when my friend Pam from Colorado (whom I met back in 2013 through her blog) said she was coming this way for 1 week, I had another good excuse to go back! 😉 This time, I stayed at Hostel Che Tulum, to be closer to the road to the beach, since Pam was staying way over there at Encantada Boutique Hotel – a splendid place to splurge on and indulge yourself in, if there ever was.
For the 2 days I was there, she came and took me back to her place, where we just hung out on the beach, under the palapas, walking in the sand, drinking margaritas and watching the locals excel at kite-surfing while the odd foreigner tried their luck at it.
Despite my short stay (Raul and I were about to embark on our 10-day vacation to Cuba back then), Pam and I could enjoy a really good time together and catch up on our latest adventures. It’s not so often that a friend comes to Mexico so I truly enjoy those moments. Specially if it means doing so with my feet in the sand, in great company, in my favorite place!
(This could also be a very special place for couples! On a day like today, love could be celebrated on a beach! 😉
What’s your very special place in your country?

I would love to visit Tulum! It looks magical!
A little touristy, of course, but very typical still and laid-back. One can only enjoy it!
We’re going to Cuba in August, and might have to make a pit stop in Tulum afterwards. Our plan originally was to go from Cuba to Mexico City, but it sounds like going first to Cancun like you and back through makes much more sense. Thanks for the wonderful post!
Glad you could find ways to make your plans in this post. We live in Merida, 3h-drive from Cancun so we always fly out from there. Tulum usually is a first or last stop on the way 😉
Have a lovely time in Cuba next August! I’ll be expecting your opinion about it! My posts about our trip are soon coming up!
A beautiful place. Very picturesque. I had to look it up on the map. Were you able to fly to Cuba direct from Tulum or did you have to go back to Mexico City first? Future planning. 🙂
From Tulum, we went straight to Cancun and flew out to Cuba from there. Much more practical 😉
Glad you know you’re thinking about stopping these ways!
Oh, I wish I had a special place like this in my country!!! This looks amazing! I’d love to relax on those white chairs, wow. I’m always curious, you’ve obviously lived in Mexico for a while so your stomach is used to the local bacteria… but have you ever had problems eating fresh salad in a restaurant, like the one in your pics? I’m always super careful, sometimes a bit too careful! (Except in Aruba, where we even drank tap water because it was purified) I’m even super careful at home… but then again, I’m not often sick.. 🙂
We’re now on another beach but one that’s quite beautiful too! Mexico has a lot to offer, beach-wise.
On the eating/drinking side, I’ve been pretty lucky, I guess; my stomach can handle a lot and I’m (almost) never sick. So, I have absolutely no problem whatsover with eating what everybody else does, anywhere in the world. If local people can eat/drink, I do too. My stomach learns that way 😉 But, I’m not very picky or careful in the beginning, either… That might have done the trick.
🙂
Sounds lovely but I will probably never visit any of that places.. LOL The beaches or the ocean never call. It is always the mountains… LOL Glad to hear that you’re enjoying your stay in Mexico. Ah… Cuba sounds good… but after a day or two around the town for those lovely and old car photos, I’ll probably head for the mountains there… LOL Happy Valentine’s Day to you guys.
You could visit to discover, even though you’ll always come back to the mountains! 😉
Looks delightful, Juls!
janet
Thank you, Janet! Have you ever been?
I have not.
Well, we’ll just hope you do some day and tell me what you think of it, first hand 😉
What a gorgeous place!! I totally understand you, Juls. Happy Valentine’s Day 💖
Right back at ya’, Erika! Enjoy the day!
Thank you 💖
Been there twice; once with my husband, once with my daughter and brother. Very touristy where we were, just below the ruins, and didn’t see any beach chairs or bars nearby. But the water….OH! What a gorgeous color!
Below the ruins, the view is amazing but it’s very touristy, indeed. Next time, go a little further down the beach, you will find the resorts, chairs and long empty (ier) beach strips. 😉
Lovely, Lovely Lovely!
What a beautiful place!
Sure is! Have you ever been?
Nope, but it’s sure thing on my bucket list.
In Ph we have gorgeous beaches as well. Maybe once I’ve seen Tulum then I could have a comparison.
😀 and I’ll be happy to hear your point of view on this comparison.
this is like paradise 🙂 love your photos!!! PedroL
It is! So glad you got a glimpse of this little paradise and enjoyed the view!
really want to go there 🙂 PedroL
I hope you soon get the opportunity!
🙂
