Ça nous trottait dans la tête depuis un moment déjà… L’île de Holbox étant notre île préférée de ce côté-ci du Mexique, ainsi qu’un lieu de villégiature privilégié de Raul depuis de nombreuses années, on avait hâte de trouver un moyen d’y être plus souvent.
La première fois que j’ai mis les pieds sur l’île et dans ses rues de sable, où il n’y a pas de voiture et où il n’y a qu’un seul petit village, c’était en septembre 2011 pour aller nager avec le requin-baleine. Depuis, c’est un endroit où nous revenons régulièrement pour nous éloigner du brouhaha ambiant des grandes villes.
Aujourd’hui, c’est pour un projet tout particulier que nous revenons… et que nous nous installons pour les mois à venir. C’est grâce au soutien d’un ami d’enfance de Raul, gérant du restaurant sur la plage d’où j’ai pris cette photo – « Raíces – Slow Food, Beach Club & Marina » -, que nous pouvons nous lancer. Sous la paillote que vous voyez au dernier plan, nous ouvrons un bar!
Nous proposons simplement quelques jus de fruits détox mais aussi, et surtout, le Pox – on prononce « poch » -, le distillé de maïs que Raul importe du Chiapas, cette région montagneuse du centre sud du Mexique, et qu’il vendait déjà dans son bar à Mérida ou lors de divers festivals. Cérémonial ou aux saveurs exotiques, ceux qui s’arrêteront par là n’auront que l’embarras du choix.
Et c’est pour tout de suite: on commence cette semaine! 😀 … (si on arrive à finir les travaux à temps!)

[En] It’s something that’s been picking our brains for some time now… Holbox island being our favorite island on this side of Mexico and Raul’s favorite vacation spot for years now, we were anxious to find a way to be there more often.
The first time I set foot on the island and in its sandy streets was in September 2011 to go and swim with the whale-shark. Since then, it’s a place where we come back regularly to get away from the relentless hurly-burly of the bigger cities.
Today, it’s for a very special project that we’re back… and getting settled in for the next few months. Thanks to the support of a friend of Raul’s, who manages the restaurant on the beach from which I took the picture above – « Raíces – Slow Food, Beach Club & Marina » -, we can make it happen. Under the beach hut in the background, we’re opening a bar!
We propose a few detox fruit juices but mainly, and most importantly, we offer Pox – pronounce « posh » -, the corn distilled alcohol that Raul has been importing from Chiapas, that mountainous state in the south center of Mexico and that he was already selling in his bar in Merida or on a few festivals. Ceremonial or with tasty exotic flavors, those who will stop by will have so much to choose from.
It’s happening right now: we start this week! 😀 … (if we’re done with the last details on time!)

[Es] Hace mucho tiempo que lo estabamos pensando… La isla de Holbox siendo nuestra isla favorita en este lado de México y un lugar de vacaciones privilegiado para Raúl desde hace muchísimos años, teníamos muchas ganas de estar acá mucho más a menudo.
La primera vez que vine a la isla y pise sus calles de arena fue en septiembre 2011 para nadar con el tiburón ballena. Desde ese entonces, volvimos regularmente para alejarnos del alboroto de las grandes ciudades.
Hoy, es para un proyecto muy especial que estamos de vuelta… y que nos instalamos acá por unos meses. Gracias al apoyo de un gran amigo de Raúl, dueño del restaurante en la playa de donde saque la foto arriba – « Raíces – Slow Food, Beach Club & Marina » -, el sueño se vuelve realidad. Bajo la palapa que ven al fondo, ¡abrimos un bar!
Proponemos sencillamente unos jugos de frutas detox pero sobre todo y principalmente ofrecemos Pox – se pronuncia « posh » -, el destilado de maíz que Raúl importa directamente desde Chiapas, el estado montañoso del centro sur del país, y que ya vendía en su bar en Mérida y en algunos festivales. Pox ceremonial o de sabores exóticos, la gente que pase por aqui tendrá mucho para probar.

This is SO exciting! Okay, so I’m being dead serious about this…would you guys be open to Hugh/Mr. H/DJ Koensy (my husband) playing at your new bar? We’ve been talking about coming to Mexico and I told him what you guys were up to. I’m missing that beach life, of course! Anyway, we can chat more by email if you want. I’d love to meet you and this seems like a good excuse! 😉
As Raúl has started to play too (he’s DJ Krais and does selective groove and electro), I’ll talk to him and his associate about it and I’m pretty sure we could strike a deal! Most of all because we’d get to meet!

The place must be close to or is a touristy area to have enough traffic? (Since I do not know the area…) Anyway, cheers! Sounds like a cool project to extend your stay, earn extra money and meet new and regular ‘customers.’ Have a lot of fun.
ahahaha that endless amount of booze would have been a great incentive, for sure… the thing is, we won’t sell booze (as our friend’s restaurant does, so we’ll only do licors and fresh juices).
That is a cool experience; we can’t wait to get going! The island is near Cancun and a popular destination from there so we should welcome our fare share of traffic.
Anyway, life on the beach can only be wonderful! 😀

Mexico is a gem! Everywhere! Wall up or not, as long as you can get back home at any time, you should plan a visit! It is VERY different from the US.
