Earlier this month, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, was inaugurated a neighborhood compost house at Square Héloïse et Abélard. A great initiative, carried by the association J’aime le Vert, that allows 200 families around the square to come and get a free 4 l. organic bin for their home and be able to empty it in the bigger compost house.
People outside of these 200 families are also interested in participating in the action. Like me, they can come either on Wednesdays between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. or on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and noon, to empty their own organic bin.
I was so happy to find out about this local action because I had been looking for a compost nearby for quite some time already. My organic bin needed to be emptied! I needed to empty it, for my own sanity! (It’s hot in the appartment right now, you can imagine what becomes of organic waste after a few days…).
When I got there the first time, there also was a neighborhood local representative, interested in the action and in the people drawn to participate. Maybe the city will extend the initiative more! Let’s hope so!
See, one step at a time, one person at a time, the world is getting greener!
Is there a compost house near you?

Wish there was a compost collector here in TX. Back in Europe is much more common.
Maybe I should introduce or ask my local municipal.. wish me luck 😉
You should ! Sometimes, they only need to hear a suggestion! I’ll cross my fingers for you 😉
😀
Great scheme, Julie, thank you for sharing. We compost our own stuff, kitchen/garden,shredded paper etc and use the output – comes of having a 900 sq metre block of land, the minimum size in our neighbourhood.
Yes, the advantages of living out of a city… Enjoy!
That’s great! City dwellers need this; I live in a suburb where each person can have their own. At our local Farmer’s Market, there are guys selling fertilizer from the worm farms that are vermicomposting. You can buy a bag of worm droppings (uniformly cylindrical and very neat-looking) to add to your soil….if you’re not doing your own vermicomposting.
That’s also super cool! It’s easier to do outside of town, but I’m happy to see that people take those matters at hand in town too.
What a great concept.
It is! That’s why I hope the concept will take on and be copied more.
I had a Bokashi bin for a while but it wasn’t cheap to buy the refil.
The advantage of only having a little compost bin and find a compost house nearby is that you don’t have to buy anything at all!
great idea, great photo and wonderful lines and composition! 🙂
😉
What a great idea for city dwellers who do not have their own garden or enough room for their own compost bin.
It is! It was a torture not to have a compost bin nearby while living in the appartment! Now, I go to the park once a week anyway!
I have shared this idea with our local garden group and produce swap group. We would also take scraps for our chickens. And then we would give you eggs in return.
that’s awesome too! I love that swapping comes back into fashion!
This is a brilliant initiative, Jules.
As I’m doing my best to reduce trash, this is one of the most important steps I needed to take.
Do you do it too?
I’m lucky to have an allotment garden where I have my own compost bins. Our local council also takes garden waste away, but I try to keep some of that too to compost for the garden at my house. But I think the initiative you feature is great. We all need to compost more 🙂
Definitely ! Especially in town!
